Measuring externalities in regional growth: an empirical approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper focuses on the dynamic effects under which the regional economic processes are accomplished, breaking them down into two broad types: neighborhood (horizontal) and economywide (vertical) externalities. So, by means of a proposed dynamic space-time empirical model, it is allowed to obtain the vertical and horizontal competition structure within a regional economic system. Co-integration/error correction modeling techniques are used to support the existence of the competition structure over both the shortand long-term. As an application, we show the dynamic effects on the evolution of the regional performance of Spanish regions over the period 1972-2000. Our results indicate that some macroeconomic forces are operating into this Spanish system: positive and negative externalities at both economy-wide and neighborhood levels. Findings show that a new taxonomy of the Spanish regions could provide some guidance as to the measures regional economic policy.

Estimates of the impact of static and dynamic knowledge spillovers on regional factor productivity
We develop an empirical approach to examine static and dynamic knowledge externalities in the context of a regional total factor productivity relationship. Static externalties refer to current period scale or industry-size effects which have been labeled localization externalities or region-size effects known as agglomeration externalities. Dynamic externalities refer to the relationship betwee...
متن کاملFrom Average to the Frontier: a Nonparametric Frontier Approach to the Analysis of Externalities and Regional Innovation Performance
Although a rich literature has emerged analyzing the impact of localization, urbanization, and Jacobs externalities on regional innovativeness, the findings are still contradictory. Traditional studies differ mainly in the employed data but rely on similar empirical approaches. This paper argues in favor of using in this context production frontier approaches instead of the commonly employed pr...

متن کاملTesting Regional Convergence in Iran's Economy
Convergence hypothesis is one of the results of neoclassical growth model, which has been examined recently. This hypothesis has two forms of absolute and conditional Beta-convergence and implies that regions with lower per capita output have higher per capita growth rates. Since there is no data for regional GDP in Iran, there has been n study to test convergence hypothesis in Iran. Our main c...

Economis growth is one of the main factors for evaluating the performance of governments. Economic growth itself is influenced by other factors that have been addressed in growth theories. Among the factors examined in growth theories, technical progress is of particular importance due to its long-term effects on growth. In recent growth models, the technological progress considered an endogeno...
